A QUIET WEEK

9th to 16th June 2012

Last weekend was the Queens Birthday long weekend, the Queen's Birthday is a public holiday in Australia, as the country is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, with the monarch of the United Kingdom being head of state.  The Monarch's Birthday was first celebrated in Australia in 1788. In that year, King George III was the Monarch and Governor Arthur Phillip declared a holiday to mark his birthday. Originally, the Monarch's birthday was celebrated on the anniversary of the actual date of birth of the King or Queen. However, after the death of King George V in 1936, the date remained close to his birthday, which was June 3.

It was a good chance to rest, especially after an extremely tiring and mentally draining week of exams.  Although on Sunday, I did decide that I wanted to throw discus and shot put at the High Noon Meet.  The weather was actually rather pleasant and with the sun shinning my spirits always brighten.  Discus was my first event, every thrower had four throws, with each throw a numbered marker is put in the ground, if your next throw is an improvement on your first one then the marker is moved.  At the end of the competition they measure your throw, I threw 5.02m in discus, not a personal best but I enjoyed throwing and that is what is most important.  Then it was time for shot put, again we had four throws, I managed to throw a distance of 2.30m which was not quite a personal best but I was happy with my effort.

While I was throwing Lauren Boden and Brendan Cole our two Canberra athletes that are going to the Olympics, ran in a 400m Hurdles race, they were just awesome to watch and I hope that they do exceptionally well in their races at the Olympics along with the other athletes and also those chosen for the paralympics.

School this week has been rather quiet with much less pressure than the past few weeks, because exams are over and our Semester work has been completed we are just starting to look at what we will be doing next Term.  In English we are looking at Romeo and Juliet, reading the play as well as watching the original film, we will then next Term have to write an essay and a new script for the balcony scene.  At times the language is a little difficult to understand because it is so very different to the way that we speak today but it is a magnificent story.

In Sports Science we are going to be doing Skills Acquisition and Coaching, which is yet another extremely interesting area to be looking at.  We have been watching a film called Invictus. The film tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team to help unite their country. As the newly elected President  Nelson Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport,  he rallies South Africa's rugby team as they make their historic run to the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship match.  I am actually enjoying watching it and feel that there is a definite lesson to be learnt from the story.

How splendiferous it was to see my Wests Tigers defeat the Melbourne Storm, they were absolutely incredible and delved deep to find the determination courage to win. I hope that they will continue to do well and at the end of the season they will be there on Grand Final day.

In Footy tipping, I also performed well, getting four correct, to over take Nana to be leading by two points.  Poor Nana had a dismal week getting none of the games correct and Pop also got four like me so he is making his comeback now.

I had an appointment with Australian Hearing today, it was my twelve month check up on my hearing.  There has been a very slight decrease at the high frequency in both ears, so my hearing aid had to be calibrated so I can hear a little better, however the machine was not working properly so now I have to go back in two weeks to have it done then.

Jarrett and Nalani are running in the Athletics ACT Cross Country Championships tomorrow, they are both running 6km, it is going to be in the morning, hopefully the weather will be favourable as they are predicting rain at times.  I hope to be able to be there to cheer them both on, I love watching them run.  When I throw they are always there to cheer me on and having your family behind you really makes a difference, you feel so loved and encouraged.

The pain in my spine is still constant, it can make me feel very tired, I try to find things to distract me from it and of course I am on pain killers to relieve it.  I often find that the pain and the medication can make if extremely difficult to concentrate and when I am at school that is frustrating.

I think this quote fits with my love of sport and with life itself - There is no telling how many kilometers you will have to run while chasing your greatest dream.

Congratulations and well done at your high noon meet last sunday .

Nice to have a quiet week at school for a change as life at school seems rather hectic most of the time .

Nelson Mandela , Dainere he is such an inspiring man , one of the worlds Greats . Yes my friend , a great story to be learned , infact more than one lesson, many lessons .

Meryl and I hope that your Tigers do well and get to the final Dainere. Well done on being back at the top of the tipping comp. BUT be on your guard as nan and pop will be looking to get back on top.

What a shame you have to go back to have the hearing aid re calibrated .

Meryl and i send our best wishes to Nalani and Jarrett at the cross country championships tomorrow .

The quote is great Dainere, not quite sure where you find them or how you make them up but they are very good .

Meryl and i are now Cooma and coming to grips with the cold weather , brrrrrr last night was so cold getting into bed Dainere, and when it came to getting up this morning , did not want to get up hahahahah.

Hi Daniere,
Well winter has certainly arrived hasn't it. Good weather for snuggling up and eating warm food. I have a big pot of soup on the stove bubbling away now.
I hope you are all better after the last few weeks. I'm sure it really knocks you about. It's nice to think that school holidays are just a few weeks away. My daughter has been studying for her semester exams as well and is a relief for all in the house when they are finished!
It's great that you are still able to compete in the High Noon comps. It really is about having a go and doing your best on the day. Although I'm sure you would like to do pb every time just getting out there is such an achievement . You inspire so many people.
I hope you have a great week ahead, and hope that you are not in too much pain. How is Nalani going as your stand in physio?
Keep warm gorgeous girl,
Xoxo
